Estacada pallet cob compost toilet workshop 2025
In May of 2025 we collaborated with 9 students to fill and plaster pallet walls for a dual stall “in situ” composting toilet building in Estacada, Oregon. This 10 day workshop taught students how to build pallet walls, formulate straw-clay base plaster, earthen-lime finish plaster, and cover these pallet walls in these plasters. We explored compost toilet design and management, and how breathable, clay walls offer a great, affordable option for building structures. As the workshop concluded, we were able to finish the building with lime fresco pigments that yielded a bright, colorful finished product.

What an Adventure!

This past September in Mossyrock, Washington, 14 students joined Clay Sand Soul for a month long pallet-cob cottage build on the beautiful forested grounds of CAYA Sanctuary. Our objective was to finish a 180 sq ft structure with reciprocal roof, earthen floor, and various finish plasters with various artistic sculptural elements. We explored many concepts of conventional, natural, and alternative building such as: foundation choices, post-and-beam assembly, pallet wall framing, electrical conduit and outlet installation, window and door installation, lath and plaster walls, clay soil analysis and processing, earthen and lime plasters, reciprocal roof assembly, green roof installation, and how to manage and execute a small construction project. We gathered together for meals, council circles, morning check-ins, breathwork, and an unexpected sweat lodge ceremony, all while learning what living in community takes and feels like. We shared in successes and struggles, especially with the particularly cool fall weather, but the result was a truly unique 7-sided building with incredible artistic touches. We are so grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Damian and Crystal’s property and for the commitment all our students made each day to learn and build with us. What an incredible first full cottage build as Clay Sand Soul, and we look forward to collaborating in the future with CAYA Sanctuary. Enjoy these fond memories that we tried to capture between hands full of mud.

Alderwood Cob Oven Workshop 2024
Course Description
Learning to build a Cob Oven is the perfect introduction to the world of Natural Building. From sourcing and testing soil compositions, to learning about the breathability clay offers as a binder in earthen construction, this project explored many of the fundamental concepts necessary to understand when choosing to build with earth. In this four-day workshop, we learned how to stack a solid stone or masonry foundation, insulate the oven platform, create a level fire-brick oven floor, pack sand into the oven cavity, build the insulated oven dome, sculpt artistic cob features, and coat everything with a resilient earthen plaster. In addition to the hands-on knowledge gained from the actual build, the workshop featured lectures that delved into the conceptual side of cob and earthen building materials.
